How to ensure that your company meets its motoring duty of care

In the Sussex area, there are many accidents each year, 30% of which result in a fatality or serious injury. And yes, this is not a particularly nice way to start an article but road safety is an issue that affects companies throughout the UK as they have a legal duty of care when it comes to running their fleet.

What is duty of care?

Duty of care means that a business takes responsibility for their employees and also, obviously, the public.
This extends to company vehicles; businesses must ensure that the necessary safety measures are taken for their employees to drive safely and their vehicles must be well-maintained at all times.
By doing so – and operating a clear road-safety aware culture within the workplace – it canmean the difference between being prosecuted or – even worse – the injury or death of an employee or a member of the public.
However, like everything, putting a new system in is not usually an easy thing to do. Making positive changes involves paperwork, strategy, planning and most of all, time. And this is not something that all business owners have.

C Fleet vehicle and fleet management system

There is now a cost effective way that duty of care can be met with ease; Neva consultants have developed a sophisticated and easy to use fleet management system called C Fleet.
The system will ensure that your company meets its legal obligations when it comes to your duty of care policy.

C Fleet can help businesses:

  • Reduce downtime of fleet vehicles
  • Prevent losses that are down to fleet unavailability
  • Reduce the cost of company vehicle repair bills
  • Avoid expensive insurance premium hikes as a result of accidents
  • Protect and improve company reputation
  • Increase profitability
  • Protect health and welfare of employees and members of the public

Sussex Safer Roads Partnership

Free of charge advice and guidance is also available from the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership; this is funded via the COSTS project. There are workplace Lunch and Learn Presentations and even Occupational Road Risk Assessments.
The aim of the COSTS project is to help businesses and keep both their employees and members of the public safe on the roads.
In addition, they are keen to help when it comes to providing support to local businesses and helping them to avoid unnecessary financial losses as a result of having a poor road-safety policy. To find out more and get involved, click here.
I do hope that this piece has been of interest and if there is anything you would like to discuss with me on the issue of road safety then please, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
